
What are these different types of brain waves? In other words, listening to binaural beats allegedly promotes brain waves associated with our most relaxed states. The purported relaxing effect is allegedly due to the fact that these frequencies are similar to the frequency of brain waves that occur during deep sleep, as opposed to the higher-frequency brain waves associated with conscious activities. It has been claimed that this third frequency prompts brain cells to begin firing at the same frequency – a process called “entrainment”. The resonance between the two frequencies is interpreted as a third sound (termed a “binaural beat”, because it involves two sound inputs, and is heard as a frequency in between the two played frequencies). If you take two sine waves, say 100Hz and 140Hz, their phases will align periodically (every 40Hz), producing peak amplitude when they're aligned and lower amplitude when they're out of phase. Using the difference instead of the sum will remove any sound that is constant on both channels, and might present a clearer view. To validate that a binaural beat exists, I think you would have to look for amplitude modulation at the target frequency on the sum (or difference) of the left and right channels.
